LAKE WALES, Fla. – The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners swept the Webber International Warriors 25-16, 25-18, and 27-25 in their final regular-season match. 

The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners dominated the Webber International Warriors in the first two sets. In the first set alone, the Warriors recorded nine hitting errors on 31 attempts and hit for -.032.

The Mariners hit for .294 in the first set with 13 kills and only three errors on 34 attempts. This trend kept up in the second set, and Coastal Georgia’s aggressive serving carried them over the Warriors.  

In the third set, Webber International kept pace with the Mariners even leading the majority of the set. Webber International never got more than three points above the Mariners but they had much more control of the game in set three.

The game was tied up 13 times in set three, demonstrating how close the teams were to each other. Coastal Georgia did edge Webber International in kills, 15 to nine however the Mariners made nine errors while Webber only made four. 

Giovana Larregui Lopez and Alison Muldrow (SR/Crosby, Tex.) tallied a match-high 11 kills each. Muldrow finished with a .562 hitting percentage. 

Larregui Lopez recorded a double-double adding 15 digs to her 11 kills. Kaci Hollenbacher (SR/Fleming Island, Fla. ) finished with eight kills on 12 attempts, hitting for a match and career-high .583.  

Gardieliz Laureano-Andujar (SR/Corozal, Puerto Rico) tallied 23 assists a match-high.  Coastal Georgia outscored Webber International in kills, assists, aces, digs, and block solos.

The Mariners also had significantly less serve receive errors, serving errors, and blocking errors. The Warriors out-blocked the Mariners with 6.0 total blocks on 12 block assists. Webber also only recorded one ball handling error while Coastal Georgia tallied five.  

The Mariners begin postseason play by hosting a Sun Conference tournament match.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (0-1) fell to the Florida College Falcons (1-0) by just two points in their season and home opener. The Falcons were victorious 79-77.

Sophomore Kaliyah Little recorded a team-high 16 points against the Falcons, and led the Mariners with two assists and three steals.

The Mariners shot 27.5 percent from the field, 18.2 percent from behind the arc, and 71.1 percent from the free-throw line. The Falcons shot 24-17 from the field, 12-33 behind the arc, and 19-20 at the free-throw line.

Throughout the majority of the game, Coastal Georgia and Florida College were evenly matched. The largest lead in the games was the Falcons by seven which occurred with only 31 seconds remaining in the game.

Florida College led the majority of the first quarter while Coastal Georgia led the second. At the half, the score was 37-34 Mariners.

Little was the leading scorer at the half, recording 12 of her 16 points. She was in for all but three min of play in the first half. Porter led the team in rebounds at the half with four, all of them were offensive.

After the third quarter, the teams were tied up 56-56. In the third, the Mariners shot 8-15 from the field and 1-2 from behind the arc. It was by far their most efficient quarter.

Nearing the end of the fourth quarter is when Florida College started to pull away, including extending their lead to seven with just 31 seconds left to play. Despite the game looking nearly impossible to win, made free throws from Little and Ca’Vashia Johnson brought the Mariners within four, and a layup with two seconds left cut the Falcon’s lead to two points.

The Mariners did not have time for another possession and fell 79-77 to the Falcons in their season opener.

Senior Quira Porter added 14 points and freshman Sonia Forney totaled 13 in her Mariner debut. Porter also added a game-high six offensive rebounds.

Freshman Sophia Simmons totaled a team-high seven rebounds including three offensive rebounds in her collegiate debut.

Up next the Mariners face Brewton Parker on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Ave Maria University volleyball team earned their first-ever win at Coastal Georgia on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Mariners in straight sets, 25-9, 25-22, 26-24. The Gyrenes had been swept in each of their previous four meetings at the Coffin Gymnasium, dating back to the 2016 season. With the win, the Gyrenes claimed sole possession of second place in The Sun Conference with just over two weeks to play in the regular season.

Saturday’s first set was the Cabriella Bouterse show. The native of Suriname was completely unstoppable, logging ten kills on eleven swings. The junior was responsible for ten of AMU’s 12 kills in the opening frame, and led an Ave Maria attack that did not have an attack error and posted a .545 hitting percentage. AMU used a 9-0 run during the set to take a 20-7 lead, and never looked back en route to a 25-9 romp.

Early in the second set, it looked to be more of the same for the Gyrenes. Ave Maria raced out to an 8-2 lead, which included two aces from Victoria Schein and two blocks – both of which involved Bouterse and Erica Chenard. Ave Maria led by as many as nine at 14-5, but the Mariners were able to rally. Coastal Georgia got as close as one point, and trailed by just two at 24-22. However, a kill from Madelyn Haut put the second set away, and gave the Gyrenes the chance to sweep the Mariners on their home floor. 

Coastal Georgia grabbed an early lead in the third set, leading by as many as three points (8-5) and as late as a 22-21. Trailing 22-21, the Gyrenes scored three of the next four points, including another Bouterse kill to set up their first match point. After Coastal Georgia fought off match point to tie the set at 24, a CCGA attack error followed by a block from Chenard and Bouterse finished the match, giving Ave Maria their tenth win of the season.

Ave Maria’s front line was once again critical in the victory, as the Gyrenes logged eight blocks as a team. This advantage at the net allowed AMU to force 29 attack errors from the Mariners, while committing just nine of their own. The Gyrenes also claimed a .280 to .017 advantage in the hitting percentage category.  

Bouterse led the Gyrenes with 16 kills in the victory, and logged a .640 attack percentage. The junior also posted six total blocks, a team high. Lily Witkoski added 30 assists, while the defensive effort was led by 13 digs from Alejandra Suarez and eleven from Miah Pena. On the block, Chenard had five block assists for the Gyrenes.

AMU’s next match comes at home on Wednesday against the only team other than Keiser to give the Gyrenes a loss – the St. Thomas University Bobcats. With a win, the Gyrenes will take full control of the race for second place in The Sun Conference. Opening serve in Ave Maria is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
