GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas honored its latest Milestone and Legends award winners as part of its annual awards ceremony on Monday, May 16 at the Spartanburg Marriott.

The Milestone and Legends awards are presented to deserving coaches and administrators that have made a long-standing impact within Conference Carolinas.

Conference Carolinas presented two Legends awards at its annual awards ceremony that was held in person for the first time since 2018-19.

Emmanuel women’s basketball head coach Mike Bona was honored as a Legends Award recipient. Bona has been a fixture at Emmanuel for over 45 years and has collected over 750 wins as a women’s basketball head coach and has also served the athletic department in various capacities such as Athletics Director and much more. In 1991 he was voted by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as the Converse Junior College Women’s National Coach of the Year. As an Athletics Director he was instrumental in the progression of the athletic program from a two-year college with just a few sports teams to a full blown four-year athletic program with several teams. He has been a key part of helping the institution transition from a two-year athletics program to the NAIA to NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas.

Retired Mount Olive Director of Athletics Jeff Eisen was also presented with the Legends award. Eisen served in a leadership role at Mount Olive for over 16 years before retiring at the conclusion of 2021. During his time as Director of Athletics, Mount Olive won a national championship in baseball, expanded from 14 to 22 sports and finished first or second in the conference’s Hawn Cup in each of his last 10 years as Director of Athletics. Under Eisen, Trojan athletics saw rapid growth, including the establishment of the Mount Olive Athletics Hall of Fame, the creation of new positions within the athletics department, and facility enhancements, including the construction of the Ray McDonald, Sr Sports Complex, the softball field house, baseball dugouts and stadium seating, the Big Rock Tournament Field House and the Jay Bundy Field House.

The conference presented four Milestone awards at the annual awards ceremony.

The first Milestone Award winner was a student-athlete on the Mount Olive men’s tennis team and then an assistant coach before moving into the head coaching role. As a head coach, Kevin Coghill captured 282 wins, five combined Conference Carolinas tournament championships, six combined Conference Carolinas regular-season championships and five appearances in the NCAA Tournament during a historic career at Mount Olive.

The second Milestone award recipient was a vital part of the Mount Olive athletics department as an administrator from 2006-2021. Dr. LaToya Lindsey began her career at Mount Olive as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Compliance Coordinator in the summer of 2006. Lindsey was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 2014. She also served as Senior Woman Administrator. Lindsey’s most significant duties outside of compliance was working with the Mount Olive Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Under her direction, the SAAC won the Conference Carolinas MVP Award for raising the most money of any conference school for the Make-A-Wish Foundation six times.

Calhoun Parr has been the head tennis coach at Erskine for over 20 years. In being recognized as one of the Milestone award recipients, Parr has picked 338 wins overall and 220 wins in conference play as the women’s tennis head coach at Erskine. The Fleet have won 11 regular-season titles and 12 conference tournament titles during his time at the helm of the program. The nine-time Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year has had 15 teams earn ITA All-Academic recognition.

The final Milestone recipient was a huge part of the King athletics department for over 17 years as the head athletic trainer, SWA and Assistant AD. Sheila Crockett spent her final 10 years at King as an Assistant Athletic Director and the Senior Woman Administrator. She served on numerous committees and she was the Chair of the Gender Equity Committee and was a member of the Wellness Strategic Planning Committee. Prior to moving into the role of Assistant Athletic Director, Crockett started out as the first full-time athletic trainer at King in 2002 where she built the athletic training program from the ground up.

BELMONT, N.C. – King won the inaugural Conference Carolinas men’s basketball developmental championship, 99-89, over Barton at Belmont Abbey on Monday night.

The event, which is a unique championship opportunity for developmental teams within Conference Carolinas, consisted of a preliminary round at King and Barton on Jan. 31 with the winners of each preliminary round playing in the championship at Belmont Abbey.

King defeated Erskine 71-59 and Emmanuel 82-78 to reach the title game while Barton defeated Belmont Abbey (84-59), Francis Marion (85-65) and Mount Olive (69-57) to reach the championship.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the first half, 14-7, and led until King took a 24-23 lead. Barton responded by building the lead back to six, 43-37 with 3:46 to play in the half. However, the Tornado closed the half on a 12-6 run to tie the score at 49 at the break. There were 10 ties and 15 lead changes in the opening period as each team shot better than 50 percent from the field and 3-point range while King held a slight 12-11 advantage on the boards.

It was a back-and-forth second half that saw several more lead changes and ties, before a Henry Okoye layup for the Tornado gave the visitors a 72-71 lead that they never relinquished. The layup sparked a 12-2 run for King as they pushed the lead to a game-high nine points, 82-73. An Isaiah Williams three-pointer broke the run and sparked an 8-0 rally for the Bulldogs to cut the margin to one, 82-81, but back-to-back layups by Zach Grodziki pushed the lead back to five for King and they never trailed again in the win.

Grodziki led all scorers with 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Tornado while Amarius Beasley added 18 points and grabbed five rounds with four assists. Dami Farinloye finished with 13 points with four rebounds and four assists.

Barton had three players finish with 20-plus points led by Williams with 23.

Farinloye was named tournament Most Valuable Player.

More information can be found on the tournament webpage here.

Earlier this fall Conference Carolinas announced that a developmental championship will be held in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball. The developmental teams will be composed of student-athletes that have either not competed at the varsity level in 2021-22 or have competed sparingly at the varsity level by the time of the championship.

Conference Carolinas
Brian Hand

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas can now officially welcome Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke as members with the turn of the calendar to the 2021-22 academic year on July 1, 2021.

The Conference Carolinas Board of Directors originally voted unanimously in favor of adding Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke as the 12th and 13th members of the NCAA Division II conference in early April of 2020.

Both Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke accepted their invitations to join the league at the time and were unveiled as new members in Conference Carolinas on April 16, 2020.

This is UNC Pembroke’s second time as a member of Conference Carolinas (1976-92). UNC Pembroke left Conference Carolinas at the time to join NCAA Division II prior to Conference Carolinas’ transition into the NCAA in the 1995-96 academic year. Francis Marion is joining Conference Carolinas for the first time.

The addition of Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke is a tremendous geographic fit for Conference Carolinas in that it gives the league five member institutions in Eastern North Carolina and South Carolina, which will create a greater geographic balance in the conference and help with scheduling.

“I could not be more excited to officially welcome Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke as members of Conference Carolinas,” Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “This is truly a historic day for everyone associated with Conference Carolinas. Both Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke have more than proven why the decision to add them as members is a strong one over the last year as we have been preparing for their arrival. The future is extremely bright for all involved in Conference Carolinas.”

Francis Marion knows joining Conference Carolinas is important not only for the upcoming academic year but for years to come.

“I am excited about this announcement – for our student-body, our nearly 300 student-athletes, our alumni and fans,” said Francis Marion President Dr. Fred Carter. “We join a conference that includes institutions located closer to home geographically. Less travel time means less time spent out of the classrooms for our students. We are joining what we think is one of the finest Division II conferences in the country – a conference that puts an enormous emphasis on body, mind and soul in the development of student-athletes.”

UNC Pembroke is excited to be back home in Conference Carolinas.

“We are excited to, once again, join Conference Carolinas, where 15 of our 16 sports will compete,” said UNC Pembroke Chancellor Dr. Robin Gary Cummings. “With the farthest trip at 300 miles, this conference is an ideal move for our student-athletes, allowing them to spend less time traveling and more time focusing on their education. And, as we enter a conference with already known rivalries, the experience is sure to bring engagement for fans, at a distance where they can travel to support our Braves on the road. UNCP is committed to providing a championship experience to its more than 400 student-athletes, and Conference Carolinas will provide that stage and more.”

UNC Pembroke Director of Athletics Dick Christy knows that this is a pivotal point in the history of their athletics department for numerous reasons.

“We are extremely excited about what the future holds for #BraveNation as members of Conference Carolinas,” Christy said. “Being a member of Conference Carolinas is not only a good geographic fit for our athletics department, but it will give our student-athletes a chance to spend more time in the classroom, as well as give our fans more opportunities to travel to road competitions and support our programs.”

Francis Marion Director of Athletics Murray Hartzler is thrilled that the day is finally here.

“I am pleased that the day has finally arrived when we make the move to our new athletic home,” said Hartzler. “Since the initial announcement in April 2020, we have been making plans for the transition to Conference Carolinas. Leading an intercollegiate athletic department, you are always on the lookout for what can enhance your program, and this move will accomplish that. We are joining a well-established conference more in our location footprint that includes institutions we have been playing on the athletic fields for nearly 50 years. I know that all our student-athletes, coaches, fans and alumni share in my anticipation as we enter the 2021-22 year as a Conference Carolinas member institution.”

This is Conference Carolinas

Conference Carolinas has a rich tradition in roots that dates back to its inception on Dec. 6, 1930. The NCAA Division II athletics conference presently has member schools located in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Member institutions for the upcoming 2021-22 academic year are Barton, Belmont Abbey, Chowan, Converse, Emmanuel, Erskine, Francis Marion, King, Lees-McRae, Mount Olive, UNC Pembroke, North Greenville and Southern Wesleyan.

Conference Carolinas believes in the development and formation of the whole person in body, mind and soul. Our students are nationally recognized for their extraordinary success in the classroom, in the community and at the highest levels of NCAA competition.

Conference Carolinas is built upon the idea of offering challenging NCAA competition in an environment that fosters both the academic and athletic achievements of its student-athletes. Conference members offer exemplary educations and scholarships for performance in the classroom and on the field. Conference Carolinas and its members are committed to challenging adversity and building tomorrow’s leaders.

Conference Carolinas is a sole sponsor of 23 sports, which is among the most in all of the NCAA. Including the collaboration with the South Atlantic Conference in men’s wrestling and field hockey along with the new partnership with the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in men’s and women’s bowling, Conference Carolinas now provides its member institutions sports sponsorship in 27 different sports.

The ability to provide its membership sports sponsorship in 27 sports is the most in all of NCAA Division II.
Conference Carolinas
Brian Hand

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas is pleased to announce the addition of Mars Hill as an Associate Member in acrobatics & tumbling.

“We are thrilled that Mars Hill has continued to grow acrobatics & tumbling with the addition of the sport,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “We are also thankful that they have accepted our invitation to join our conference as an Associate Member. The addition of Mars Hill gives us another tremendous institution working with Conference Carolinas while also giving us the opportunity to extend the acrobatics & tumbling footprint into a new area in western North Carolina.”

Mars Hill will start competing in Conference Carolinas acrobatics & tumbling in the upcoming 2021-22 academic year.

“We are very excited about joining Conference Carolinas to compete in the sport of acrobatics & tumbling,” Mars Hill Director of Athletics Rick Baker said. “It will be a great fit for us since Conference Carolinas is in our geographic footprint and we already play many of their schools in other sports in non-conference competition. Conference Carolinas is a great league and it provides us with immediate scheduling of competitions as well as provides our acrobatics & tumbling athletes the opportunity to compete for a conference championship and other postseason awards. We are very appreciative to Conference Carolinas for adding us to their league.”

Conference Carolinas will have nine programs competing in acrobatics and tumbling in the 2021-22 academic year in Belmont Abbey, Chowan, Coker, Converse, Emmanuel, King, Lander, Limestone and Mars Hill.

Conference Carolinas just recently completed its inaugural season of acrobatics & tumbling in the 2020-21 academic year. The first-ever Conference Carolinas Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship was held on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 on the campus of King University in Bristol, Tennessee. The semifinals were held on Saturday followed by the team final on Sunday. In addition, Conference Carolinas held its first-ever event finals on Sunday morning before the team final between King and Converse later that afternoon. King won the inaugural regular season title in Conference Carolinas, while Converse took home the tournament title.

Three Conference Carolinas teams were nationally ranked over the course of the 2021 spring season with King ranked as high as fourth nationally.

In addition, Conference Carolinas also provides championship opportunities for its member institutions in Esports. Conference Carolinas held its inaugural Madden and NBA2K Championships during the 2020-21 academic year.

Conference Carolinas and the Mountain East Conference are the only NCAA conferences to presently sponsor the sport of acrobatics & tumbling.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas has unveiled its 2020-21 Spring Team Messick Sportsmanship Award winners.

The Conference Carolinas Directors of Athletics implemented the process by which the Conference Carolinas Messick Sportsmanship Awards are determined. A student-athlete and coach from each institution vote separately upon the sportsmanship of all conference competitors. Each institution then submits those votes to the conference office where the averages are then calculated to decide the winner for each conference-sponsored sport.

The Team Messick Sportsmanship Awards are named after John D. Messick, who was the President of former conference member East Carolina from 1947-59. Messick truly championed sportsmanship and even wrote a book entitled, “Personality and Character Development.”
